A few weeks ago, Gerhard and I took a weekend getaway to Rome, thanks to a really good offer we found in Expedia: 570 euros for 3 nights in a very well located hotel, breakfasts and round flight from Köln to Fiumicino. Not bad at all! We took this trip to celebrate something really important: We've got engaged! :)
The two hours flight is really incredible, because it goes through the Alps. It's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in my life. Tons of mountains covered in immaculate white snow, perfectly gorgeous. It's a view that takes your breath away and makes you feel grateful. A few minutes later, you land in Rome.
The city is absolutely stunning. Everywhere you walk, everywhere you look, you'll find tons of history and details. Since we had such a little time, we decided to make a list of the things we didn't want to miss: Colosseum, Roman Forum, Piazza Venezia, Fontana di Trevi, Vatican City. Be careful with pickpockets, though. We survived the trip without missing anything, but also saw very dramatical scenes in places like the subway, of people crying hysterically because a silent thieve took something if not expensive, at least valuable for them.
If you're like us, you won't grab a bite before the flight, dreaming about all of the amazing pasta, pizza, lasagna, salads, gelatos and a long etcétera you'll be able to treat yourself with as soon as you get there. Well, the truth is finding good food in Rome is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. You'll see dozens of places where you would definitely want to try stuff, but most of them don't really serve the quality food they say they offer. Our recommendation is not to get infatuated by the facade. It's better to walk a bit and try to find a smaller place, maybe not as fancier as the ones dedicated to attend tourists, but with definitely better food. Another advice: always take a look at the soft drink menu. Plenty of times, specially in those tourist-crowded restaurants you might feel attracted too, the things you might ask without thinking will be the most expensive ones. Trust me: in our first meal there we paid 8 euros for a small bottle of Coca-Cola. It's what Gerhard likes to call "the extensive version of Roman pickpocking". Pay a lot of attention to where you'll take your meals.
Beside these security tips, the truth is that Rome has tons of amazing views and things to offer. Is a city to experiment modern life framed into old history. The pictures below were taken by Gerhard, who has become the official photographer of this blog. Enjoy!
